The Art Movement 'Elongatism', 20th
Century Figure & Portrait paintings,
with the birth of ' Elongatism
' by Theodore Zimmerman HPSAA
The 'late period' paintings,
have a styalized and intense movement and spiritual feeling about them,
as Theo. attempts to capture
in paint, the aura and ambience of the eternal spirit of
people at
their daily work or children
at play in a portrait or figure drawing.
The birth of 'elongatism'
by Theo. , first seen in his early paintings when he was 16
years old,
developed into his own personal
and original style.
'Elongatism'.
Theo. said: " I want to create
a style of painting and drawing, that when anyone views one of
my paintings from across
a room, that person will immediately know that the artist
Theodore Zimmerman painted it.
The normal visual representation
of a person in a photograph or portrait is obsolete,
because
the body changes every day
as we journey through the ageing process .
I create in my paintings the aura
and ambience of the eternal spirit, soul or scene which never
changes."
The artist's answer to an American
onlooker who was watching him paint, who had remarked
that his painting was missing
many details, was, quote, " If you want an accurate account
of what
you are looking at, go and
find a photographer. If however, you have the intelligence
to
appreciate a work of art, then
ask me to paint it.". Following this comment, the onlooker
asked if he could purchase
the painting, Theo. replied, " Certainly, that is if you can
afford it."

Alberto Giacometti. (CLICK)
Theodore Zimmerman visited Alberto
Giacometti at his studio in Montparnasse, Paris
in 1954/55, and his early
'elongatism' drawings were much admired by Giacometti.
During other visits, Theo. completed
five "elongatism" drawings of Giacometti and
two of Annette, where he
would call her Anna, to which she approved. The drawings are now
held in his family collection.
In his studio after the war, Giacometti
began the sculptures of slender proportions
with highly agitated surfaces with
which he has become famous..
Giacometti's Paris studio was at
46 rue Hippolyte Maindron, off the rue d'Alésia, and
he worked there almost continuously
from 1927 until his death in 1965.
After the Second World War,
he rented the adjacent studio, the space was both
studio and living space. In 1947
he was joined there by Annette Arm who was from
Geneva, and he married Annette
in 1949.
Landscape ' Elongatism '
Theo's development into pure landscape
began later in his career, and when working, he
tried to place on paper or
canvas his own personal innermost feelings for the landscape
rather than a detailed
and accurate description as you would see in a photograph.
By ignoring all irrelevant detail
and concentrating on a minimum of simple shapes, a
limited number of muted
tertiary colors and vigorous strokes of the brush or pastel,
an artistic vision of the
landscape was quickly created.
The combination of 'Impressionism'
and 'Elongatism' together allowed Theo. to place
on canvas or paper his intense
feeling of love for the beauty of nature.
